The Mac Mini....sleek...shiny...fast..made in China by some 5 year old girl for a quarter of a bowl of rice.

Capable of so much more than Joe Liberal is going to put it through.

Why? What happened to the Joe Liberal super computer?

It died.

It was running Vista...America's favorite version of Windows haha...

And it told me one day that the reason everything was running so slow was because I simply needed one of their hourly security updates. So I thought "Cool I can make this thing faster" and did the update.

Apparently I'm the last person on Earth to discover what a huge pile of crap Vista is... but do you remember that scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark"? where they open the box with the Ark in it...and the light just shines out of the box and the spirits all circle everywhere and the people's faces end up melting?

My update was similar to that scene except in the movie Harrison Ford wasn't prompted to "press any key to retry" when it was over.

Soooooo...Here I am with a MAC...

And one hitch is that all my Joeliberal.com files are all on the Ark of the Covenant burned hard drive.

And I'm totally used to using an old 1993 copy of "Dreamweaver" for updating this stupid page... Suddenly I was faced with spending hundreds of dollars to get a new Mac version of Dreamweaver....or trying to find something that would work for my ugly HTML for free.

A friend pointed me to a open source program called Blue Griffon. At first it seemed to be perfect, but the problem with it was that it lets you create "some" of the page then if you want to do something complex... like umm...say.... "use a different font size" haha..they want you to PURCHASE the add on that lets you do that without having to hand code text sizes.

Jerks..

So ...I ended up with a program called KompoZer.

So far so good....

in fact it's faster to use than Dreamweaver...and that's with me hunting around for certain features..

It did lock me out of some features in mid page and I had to close it and open it once already but I think it was me doing something wrong rather than a glitch... but anyway....

I'm back...with a Mac!

Virginia Ultrasound Bill: Republican Lawmaker Calls Abortion 'Lifestyle Convenience'

State Del. C. Todd Gilbert (R-Woodstock) made the comment midday Tuesday as the House of Delegates took up consideration of the ultrasound bill. The bill -- which then passed the House 63 to 36 -- would require any woman seeking an abortion in the state to receive an ultrasound first. As an external ultrasound is not able to produce a necessary picture early in pregnancy, a trans-vaginal ultrasound would be needed to produce an image of the fetus or embryo.

When you can't use your plan for jobs...or your plans for the economy...or your great record in ANYTHING to get people to come out and vote for you... you need to find something else that will work on the above groups.

House Republicans late Thursday night adopted an amendment that would prohibit California from receiving any high speed rail money in a huge five-year transportation bill headed to the House floor next week. The $270 billion bill also eliminates bicycle and pedestrian programs and detaches urban mass transit funding from its traditional revenue source. The underlying bill did not include any high speed rail funding to begin with, and indeed would cut Amtrak by 25 percent, so the prohibition serves mainly as a stick in the eye to California’s plan for bullet trains.

The action is part of a continuing effort by Republicans to kill the entire project, which was a major element of President Obama’s 2009 stimulus. California’s $100 billion plan for bullet trains running from San Francisco to San Diego already has the stimulus money in hand to get started, but future federal funding on which the project depends is very much at risk if House Republicans maintain control of the chamber, not to mention take the White House.

Addict update(s)

I originally planned to do an update before my computer died....and I had it all typed up and ready to go... but things happened since that time and now so I had to keep that update and add a second NEW update... All GOOD NEWS.

I've had some people asking about what's been going on and wishing me/us well...

For the background of this situation...
please read this first.

ADDICT UPDATE #1
(before my PC melted)

**Ten days before Thanksgiving**

Well... things are now speeding up to a conclusion of this stage of his life.

And this will all sound bad but believe me this is a good thing...because everything else that's been going on has been a downward spiral which would either end with jail or a horrible lonely death......

I did predict that once he was on official "probation", things would be coming to a head quickly because in NJ you can commit all assortments of crimes and not get any real punishment...but there are TWO things that will get you in real trouble. One is violating your probation....and with him it was just a matter of time since he couldn't go 8 hours without shooting up.

The OTHER thing that will do it by the way.. is not showing up for one of your 20 court dates.

Addiction quiz:

"Joe Addict" may have court on either the 10th or the 17th of the month... so during court business hours on the 9th of the month Joe Addict spends his time:

1) Calling the court to confirm his court date

2) Assuming it's the following week because calling would interfere with his daily trip to Newark, NJ for drugs

Needless to say... court was indeed on the 10th.

By the 17th he received a letter telling him he had a bench warrant out for him.
By the evening of the 17th our town's police dept were combing the streets looking for him
During their hunt..he more less disapeared and has not surfaced since.

It's been a couple weeks and I'm kinda worried but also kinda optimistic. Here's why.

Back a few months ago...he had been talking about the possibility of going to jail. Our guess is that he'd get about 6-9 months for everything he had originally been charged with plus any possible probation violations.. One thing he said to me was that the bad thing about rehabs is that they let you just walk right out of them. And he has done that a couple times. He said that in jail, you rehab and you can't cheat. And you get 3 meals and he also realizes you are more less safe from responsibility for the time you're there. So we talked about this and he realized that when that happens (and we both knew it will) he could treat it like a giant "reset button" on life where he gets to stay there and finally stay off drugs... then come out and have no probation and none of the BS that keeps him tied to the Garden State and jumping through hoops and not being able to get life back to normal. Then he can actually get a job without knowing in advance he's going to eventually lose it. He can get a place to live. He can save money... another words...he can do all the trivial crap that normal people take for granted.

But why did he disappear?

Not positive but if I were a betting man I'd say he's trying to detox himself in a "medical" setting FIRST rather than do it on the floor of a jail cell. If I knew I was going to jail for a spell and was "on the run" for a short time that's probably would I'd do if I was that addicted and knew how horrible withdrawal of heroin is especially with the problems with his teeth.

My prediction is he'll turn up on his own within a few weeks. Then spend a good portion of 2012 in the county jail which was inevitable and to be honest...6 months there is MUCH better than 28 days in a religious cult rehab where they make you lie in a bed and stare at the ceiling when you're not sitting in a circle talking about how morally corrupt your soul is.

Plus jails have free dental and it cant be worse than his last appointment at the clinic.

In the mean time ....

I have my house back!!!!! which is great in a way... because I do love having the place to myself....and at the same time I pace around a lot and just look out the door and wonder where he is....and then just walk from room to room because I'm totally new at having nobody here. I'm not sure how long it will be until I get used to it.

So that's the update this time.... the addiction story is nearly over I believe... (I hope)

And if I'm right... this is the beginning of the chain of events which will save his life.

As a side note... a word about my local police...

so far they have:

- Told my neighbors and friends that they are sure I'm hiding him in my house
- Entered my house without a warrant and without me home - and do not know that I know they did
- Continue to tell people that I'm hiding him in my house..when I tell them to come in and check, they decline to come in...which would be odd wouldn't it...well unless you already illegally searched the place, right?
-Lied to the county prosecutor office and saying he "ran" from them and that one was inured chasing him
- Lied to the county prosecutor saying that I am hiding him and I'm the one that has been buying his drugs

It's a small town and unfortunately the kids that grow up in town don't get hired as cops anymore and what we get now is transfers from bigger cities. So you get cops in a little town now that don't know the residents and also are not used to being in a small community. So they absolutely terrorize the kids of the town and any non-resident minorities that are unlucky enough to try to drive through.

They HATE that this kid disappeared on them. They've GOT to beat him...So they're treating it like he's on the FBI 10 most wanted list...for 4 bags of dope and a needle possession...and messing up a court date. All victim-less crimes by someone who is very sick with addiction. You have to hear the stuff they call him when they talk about him.

When he comes back and hopefully turns himself in...which I am 100% sure he will if nothing happens to him first where ever he is....I HOPE he turns himself in to anyone but the local PD.

At this point I do hope he serves real time in a place he can't get out of .... and for longer than a month or two...it will save his life...but with the local cops treating this like it's a sporting event for them...I hope they lose.

ADDICT UPDATE #2
(On my cool new Mac Mini)

**Early December to now**

Well...it seems I was right about his intentions.

Somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas I get a call from the jail.. It was him.

He was staying with one of his junky friends for a couple weeks while trying to get into a detox place so he could turn himself in "clean". No place wanted to take him and he just decided to just get himself dropped off at the jail and detox there. And that's what he did.

I'm HAPPY to say the last day he did heroin was the last day of November, 2011.

Because he turned himself in, his bail was set ridiculously low and he was approached by a bondsman who told him that for 80 dollars he could be out in an hour. He told the guy to go screw and stayed in the county jail for two months through the 4 court proceedings he had including the "probation violation" charge that kicked in when he missed the court date back on the 10th of Nov.

In a stroke of luck...he got one of those "liberal judges" that treat drug addicts like medical patients rather than dirtbag criminals. And this judge gave him the option of this thing called "drug court" which would have let him go (again) and would have assured that he would violate a much stricter probation again if he survived. OR 3 years probation AND he gets to be sentenced to a facility which is part rehab part halfway house part job skills training part psychological evaluation and assistance....which is what he needs more than anything.

He took the rehab place and probation.
Which is where he is now. He's getting group therapy... he's getting anger management help which he desperately needs... He's getting depression help...which he needs. He gets a small amount of that 12 step garbage, but he's ok with that. Most importantly he gets to stay away from his scumbag friends for over a year while learning job skills and building up his self esteem.

He said they signed him up for and he has been approved to get his teeth fixed (we'll see how well) for low cost!

I have not seen him this happy since he was 13 and got a the video game Counterstrike for Christmas.

He's still in a month long period there where he can't have visitors but he does get messages out to me to bring him more and more of his clothes....
......and cigarettes ...lots of cigarettes.

And he would have to smoke Marlboro. Not some cheap brand...

So...that's it for now... He's clean. He's safe.

He's getting better.

It was his decision.

That's always the most important part.

My fear of course...as his pseudo-dad...

will always be what happens when he leaves there and interacts with his old friends again.

But that will be some time away.

I think he'll be OK.

I hope.

By the way... Global-Tel-Link is the scummy crooked company that has a monopoly on the inmate phone call system in way too many prisons.

As opposed to just using collect calls , you are forced to accept calls from this horrible company which charges your card in $25 or $50 sales... and for that you get the shittiest sounding muffled disconnecting staticy communications since Bell invented the telephone.

Their computer voice payment system is inept. you could enter a credit card number fifty times and if you press "2" it will say "you entered 4...is this correct? press 1 for yes" then after it screws up 3 times it hangs up on you. Its almost like a comedy skit.

Then when you finally get your payment in... as far as I have been able to guess...each call is about 3 dollars plus like 30 cents per minute...which is why the system hangs up on you after every 10-15 minutes... and why the connection is lost every so often. Because when it hangs up on you ..it makes another 3 dollars every time from everyone it hangs up on. The customer service is horrible and impersonal. It's something that nobody knows about until they have to deal with having someone they know in jail.

But none of this matters to this horrible company because they're the only game in town. Someone in the justice system must be enjoying their relationship with this horrible company.

Bottom line...if they didn't suck so bad....I would not mind the over charges and robbery and chalk it up to "supply and demand" ..but they suck so bad.

The only reason this company hasn't been sued off the planet is the same reason 99% of nursing homes haven't been sued off the planet for killing and neglecting elderly people.

I must precede this by saying that I DO have an enormous amount of right wing nuts as friends on Facebook....so this may be an extreme reaction on my part to an above normal amount of material that I received as opposed to the average Facebook user....

There were about 10 different "Whitney Who" posters going around Facebook. 0ver 60% of my friends on FB "liked" and forwarded these. Then many posted statuses and liked other statuses which were all along the lines of :

"Fuck that crack whore....she gets honored and the brave marines who died don't get the flag lowered when they die...its a damn shame. What is the Governor thinking?"

This was all within 48 hours of Whitney Houston passing away.
I watched it all scroll by in sadness. Not sadness for her...I hardly knew her as an artist other than some songs... and I know nothing of her personal life.

It was out of sadness because like a car wreck I was riveted to the computer screen watching people pile on this thing like a pack of hyenas.
People I never thought would jump on with this pile of assholes jumped right on top.

Tragically most of these people were cops and veterans. Our roll models of "honor" and "selflessness".

I couldn't answer this on my private real life page because I'd end up with less than five friends left and I'd end up unemployed (for my views)

Thankfully I got the new computer before this story got too old to comment on...

SO HERE'S WHAT I THINK:

1 - Whitney Houston is a legend in NJ...like Springsteen, Sinatra, Bon Jovi and Jerry Lewis (whom I hate).

2 - All of them deserve to be honored in NJ. Just like people getting keys to the city... just like people being made honorary Knights. It's an honorary thing that we as civilized and nice people do for people that the public loves in an geographic area because of several reasons including creating music. And unless you're a jealous prick, lowering the flag for someone like this does not make it any different for anyone else it gets lowered for.

3- Every Single Member of the armed forces that has died that these people are saying aren't being honored or haven't had the flag lowered for them...HAVE HAD THE FLAG LOWERED AND HAVE BEEN HONORED. To say that they were not honored is a lie.

4 - People who praise the military at every turn..I'll call them "Flag Wavers"say

"Yes its tragic that Whitney (a crack whore) died....but These brave men and women who fight for our freedoms aren't being honored as much as Whitney Houston. And it's a shame"

I will agree with that statement when we honor Whitney Houston for the three days after her tragic death... THEN we honor her again on Memorial day...Then when we honor her again on Veterans day...Then when we observe Independence Day where someone always says we need to thank our "BM&WWFFOF" Then on Thanksgiving when we say we need to say thanks to our "BM&WWFFOF" Football games...hockey games.....baseball games...NASCAR.... TV Shows...radio shows...Civic groups..... etc etc etc etc etc....

Then we can all say she was honored too much and too much more than the brave men and women who fight for our freedoms.

And nobody even talks about her....
She's yesterdays news...

And after a crappy period of her life she couldn't even have a peaceful death and non judgmental memorial in her own state.

I would have thought the people who joined the protest of Whitney being honored were bigger and better than this...I was wrong.
