I know I know.... I've been on a bit of a hockey theme lately but trust me this makes sense.
Since the early 1980's I've been a NJ Devils fan. I even had season tickets back in the days where they would win about 10 games a year. Back then, they would give out "victory tickets" to fans at home games. If you collected 4 of them (meaning if you went to 4 home victories) you would be able to turn those tickets in for a free home game. As soon as the Devils started winning more than 4 home games a year, that promotion ended.
Yes in the early 80's there was not too much to be proud of being a Devils fan. I remember our big rivalry (to this day) was with the New York Rangers. To this day there are still MANY rangers fans in NJ. It's because we are so close to the city and because the Rangers had a huge fan base long before the Devils came into existence. All the home Devils games, the crowd was a 50/50 split of Devils and Rangers fans. What I remember was the Devils fans - were very quiet and reserved. We'd clap when they scored (rarely) and we would never really be obnoxious back then because even if we were up by 5 goals with 2 minutes left - we would lose. On the other hand, the Rangers fans were chanting, mocking, abusing, cursing, bullys. In person Rangers fans were proud of their team and would boast about it on the job, at home, all around town. Devils fans were closeted until they won the Stanley Cup in 1995. I knew of one guy (his name is Joe) who would be just as obnoxious as the Rangers fans and many times was much worse. He spoke for us who could not even admit we were fans. He'd practically get in fistfights for the Devils. He'd get boo'd out of our own arena. He was the Michael Moore - Randi Rhodes of the NHL world back then.
Oh yeah my point.... sorry...
The
Rangers had this guy in the mid 90's named Esa Tikkanen. Every Devils fan hated
this guy. Hated his guts. He cheated every game. He used to hit guys in the
wrist with his stick. He'd hit people after the play to try to get someone to
take a swing at him. If he would have walked into the stands... someone would
have punched him in the face. We hated him. Rangers fans - who KNEW he cheated
and got away with it ... LOVED HIM. They cheered every time he would trip or
take his stick and jam it into the back of someone's head. They would get mad
at the Referee if Tikkanen was get caught and given a penalty. He was one of
the dirtiest players in the game and the NY fans simply didn't care.
The same decade, the Devils
traded for a player named Claude Lemueux. It was the same thing. Claude would
cheat 
try
to injure players on opposing teams to try to instigate that team into taking
a penalty out of retaliation. Every fan of every other team in the league hated
his guy and wanted Claude dead. We loved him. He was the hero of the Devils
when they won us the Stanley Cup in 1995.
NOW...
THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN BUT...
IF...
The Rangers and Devils made a trade on a Monday afternoon back in the 90's and traded Lemieux for Tikkanen. By monday night's game - All the Ranger Fans would want to kill Tikkanen and all the Devils fans would want to kill Lemieux.
It wouldn't matter if these guys actually crippled someone on the ice. To the fans this was "Their Team" and you HAVE to support your team.
THIS IS SPORTS FAN MENTALITY
Its why people will back every popular person iin sports from Tyson to OJ to that guy that murdered his limo driver.
This is why if you give a Republican a TRILLION reasons that Bush should not be elected , their minds will shut down and they will just walk away or better yet change the topic to talk about someone who was President 4 years ago. This is why George W Bush could literally murder someone on the whitehouse lawn and STILL a majority of Republicans would support him. It's why Michael Moore is bad for talking about the President but all the scumbags on the radio are good for talking about the President four years ago. It's why Whoopi Goldberg is attacked for making a remark about President Bush with the sexually suggestive word "bush" in it and why Dennis Miller is not attacked for using the actual word "blowjob" in a remark about President Clinton. It's why the "Liberal Left Wing Mainstream Media" will pick every fact apart in a movie by Michael Moore trying to find a "lie" but we have not seen ONE reporter ask ONE question face to face with Bush or Rumsfeld or Powell about where they actually came up with this "absolute evidence" that Iraq was going to attack us. Or ONE question about Bush's records - military or arrests. ONE question about Cheney ... The Saudis ... James Baker.. etc etc etc.. In fact EVERY ONE of the things Moore is being picked apart about SHOULD have been asked to the Bush side with the same suspicions. But you will never see that. It's SPORTS FAN Mentality.
I can prove it.
Ask ANY Republican what the last GOOD THING that ANY Democratic President has done.Their eyes will roll back like Linda Blair in the Exorcist while the try to think of ONE THING. And they're so brain dead that the will come up with NOTHING. They may go all the way back to Kennedy and even passed that if they come up with anything at all. IT'S BECAUSE THE DEMOCRATS ARE THE OTHER TEAM.
IF you ask me what was the last good thing that any Republican President has done - I'd say its when George W. Bush issued guidelines barring federal agents from using race or ethnicity in their routine investigations. That was easy.

Make Bill Clinton a Republican for a moment and give him the same marital problem. You know what? EVEN LET HIM LIE TO CONGRESS ABOUT IT. UNDER OATH. Now watch what happens to him. #1- He wouldn't have been impeached. #2- He'd have his own Radio show or Cable TV show like Ollie North who lied to congress. #3 He'd be one of Sean Hannity's closest friends and frequent expert guests on morality like North, Gingrich, and Mark Fuhrman (who almost single-handedly justified a not-guilty verdict for a murderer by committing perjury). HE'd be Bill Clinton - American Patriot. Make Bob Dole a Democrat for a day and you'd hear how he cheated on his first wife with his present one Elizabeth. But we never hear about that. We hear that Clinton had a 4 year 24 hours a day BJ and did NOTHING else for his entire two terms.
It's because of SPORTS FAN MENTALITY. You GOTTA root for your team no matter what happens.
The reason Republicans SERIOUSLY think that the election in 2000 was saved from Gore trying to steal it is the SAME reason that us NY Jets fans see nothing wrong with Vinny Testerverdi running 4 yards to score a 5 yard touchdown to keep Seattle out of the playoffs in 1998. You want your team to win "however they do it". Only in Government its wrong and scary to think that way.
We need to rid America of SPORTS FAN MENTALITY on both sides and see politicians as people.... good people ... bad people ....but people and not "players" you root for because your party happens to have them on their team.
Clueless sports fans are very close to making this country a very scary place for many years.
That's all.... "God Bless America" -" Lets Go Devils" - and "Anybody But Bush." Not because he's a Republican ... because he's inept and has interests other than the good of the country and is all around dangerous.
